The name "Fontane di Nogarè" (Fountains of Nogaré) derives from the village of Nogarè, on the outskirts of Belluno, and the fact that within a large flood plain on the right-hand side of the Piave there is considerable surfacing of ground water, spring water and source water, which is the distinguishing feature of the whole biotope. The area can be considered an important example of a river ecosystem, since it contains good numbers of many of the plant and animal species typical of such an environment. A great deal of research conducted in the past has shown how interesting this area is from an environmental point of view, and even non-experts can easily appreciate the wealth of flowers, plants and animals that can be observed here. The area, which lies in the flood plain of the Piave and is periodically flooded, is one of the few SCI (Sites of Community Importance) in the area pertaining to the river, which, along this stretch, is not particularly steep, and takes off into numerous side branches, which, together with the source channels and with a number of other humid zones, contribute to the particularly complex hydrography of the area

Go down to the Piave from Via Vittorio Veneto, and near a fuel station, or at the roundabout for Cusighe, take the third exit into Via A. Bettio towards the Piave (leave your car in the parking area before the bend). Continue for about 180 m and take Via Paolo Cantilena on the right; from here a steep dirt road leads down to the Fontane di Nogarè area.

Near Belluno there were once numerous sources of water, which dried up as a result of the Vajont disaster and the flood in 1966. The fontane took their name from the place they surfaced in, and as well as those in Nogarè, in and around Belluno they were also to be found at L’Anta, Lambioi, Veriaga, San Pellegrino and I Tof.
