In 1550, Pierio Valeriano recalled that “almost directly opposite Mel is the mouth of the Cordevole, and there is also a ferry on the river, similar to the San Felice one upstream, but less frequently used”. In the area that lies between Sedico, Santa Giustina and Mel, the Cordevole torrent flows into the Piave, in a large, flat area, forming a fluvial-riparian environment composed of dry floodplains of particular interest to naturalists. These gravelly geomorphological formations derive from the material carried along by the rivers that flow through the area. The water quality is good, and many species of fish and animals can be found here.
Along the SS50 from Belluno, go through the centre of Sedico-Bribano, and just after the bridge over the Cordevole, turn left onto the tarmac road, go under the railway line and along a good country road to the Piave plains at Gravazze and Fant, or go down right to the edge of the Cordevole and follow the torrent along dirt roads until it meets the Piave. Alternatively, go along the straight stretch of road that comes out of Santa Giustina, and at km 22.5 take the road on the right that leads to the Maserot waste treatment plant.

Downstream from the village of Santa Giustina is the ancient neighbourhood of Campo, beside which is the large paper mill. The village was once a landing stage for those crossing the Piave from the station of Nave, downstream from the village of Mel.
The flow of the Veses torrent, which runs through the village of Santa Giustina, still forms the border between the diocese of Feltre and that of Belluno, and although both have been under a single bishop since the 13th century, the watercourse still marks this historical dividing line. On the left of the Piave, the municipalities of Limana, Trichiana, Mel, Lentiai and Vas still belong to the Diocese of Vittorio Veneto, although geographically they are part of the province of Belluno. This division dates back to the 13th century, and the border was marked east of the flow of the Limana torrent; this division forced Belluno to concede all the passes between the Belluno and Treviso areas, from the narrow at Quero (see file no. 77) to the Praderadego and San Boldo passes, right to the Fadalto saddle.
